STAGE 7 SPOTLIGHT CAMH: Optimization Project Helps Standardize and Improve Care

The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) is Canada’s largest mental health and addiction teaching hospital, as well as one of the world’s leading research centers in the area of mental health and addictions. CAMH staff work diligently with family doctors, home support services, community agencies and other healthcare providers to make sure that clients and their families can receive assistance in their own communities and homes.

To further improve care, CAMH decided to streamline workflows and create an integrated solution to standardize access to information and care pathways. Prior to the implementation, CAMH had disparate and standalone processes including paper, hybrid and computerized systems. This approach resulted in numerous challenges such as duplicate documentation, adverse drug events, difficulty accessing patient and clinical information, and the inability for clinicians to effectively collaborate to support the best patient outcomes.

One of the guiding principles for the Optimization Project was ensuring CAMH leveraged the EMRAM criteria and was subsequently well positioned to achieve Stage 7. Time savings have been reported when accessing clinical documentation, lab results, and other clinically relevant information due to the standardized folder structure and consolidated storage environment.

And most importantly, patient outcomes have improved due to the structure of the system workflows and facilitation of collaboration. On average, 954 patient identification errors are caught by the system prior to medication administration per month. One such example includes improvements to the Clozapine order set, which has prevented 17 patients from developing myocarditis, a potentially fatal condition, since June 2015.
