In 2018, Rush University Medical Center (RUMC) achieved HIMSS Analytics Adoption Model for Analytics Maturity Stage 7. RUMC demonstrated the ability to stream data in real time from many sources, process it, and provide analysis on an almost-real-time basis.

The HIMSS Analytics Adoption Model for Analytics Maturity (AMAM) is designed to measure and advance a healthcare organization’s analytics capabilities. Analytics serve to improve many facets of business beyond clinical decision support, such as the operational and financial aspects of the organization. This international eight-stage (0-7) model measures the capabilities gained from installation of technology and surrounding processes.

The AMAM helps healthcare providers around the world focus their analytics efforts and investments by driving clinical, operational and financial analytics efforts to align with and support their organizational strategy. The model is flexible enough to accommodate different types of organizations, cultures and approaches to maturity.

In their analytics implementation, RUMC reviewed an initiative aimed at substantially reducing the number of people who present at the Medical Center’s emergency department, but leave without being seen (LWBS). A hospital’s LWBS percentage is often considered a key indicator of overall efficiency and as having significant impact on revenue and patient satisfaction. RUMC leadership felt their percentage was too high and set an aggressive goal of lowering it to 1.4 percent of ED visitors leaving before receiving treatment.rush amam

From there, a multidisciplinary group of clinicians, executives and data scientists came together to address the issue. By building predictive models that utilized large demographic and utilization data sets in real time, the team was quickly able to identify high risk patients and customize workflows in near real-time to intervene before patients left the hospital. After the predictive models shaped new clinical workflows, the LWBS rate dropped from 3.83 percent to 1.25 percent. “Data and information are the new liquid gold,” said Dr. Shafiq Rab, senior vice president and chief information officer, Rush University Medical Center and the Rush System. “At Rush, we are using tools like artificial intelligence and machine learning to mine that gold and use it to improve outcomes for our patients and our communities.” 

HIMSS Analytics hosted a webinar on Monday, April 22, 2019 to provide an overview of the AMAM as well as highlight RUMC’s successes. James Gaston, Sr. Director, Healthcare Advisory Services Group, HIMSS Analytics provided a short overview of the model as an introduction and then turned it over to Bala Hota, Vice President & Chief Analytics Officer, RUMC, who guided viewers through the RUMC analytics strategy.
